SUMMARY:Celebrating the Legacy of Kenneth Walley
DESCRIPTION:In 1957\, Kenneth Walley opened the Walley Funeral Home on Calvert Street in Chestertown\, achieving his high school ambition of becoming a mortician. As the first Black mortician and embalmer in Kent County\, Mr. Walley served his community with care and compassion\, operating his business for decades out of a modest building that today stands on the property of KCPL’s Chestertown branch. \nAfter many years of serving as a meeting space\, the building closed to the public due to a need for major repairs. Thanks to FY24 grant funding through the Maryland Heritage Areas Grant Program\, the structure has been renovated and is ready to reopen for use!\nKCPL invites you to celebrate the revitalization of the building and the legacy of the Walley Funeral Home. Join us to tour the building\, learn its history as the location of a deeply respected and long-standing Black-owned business\, and pay tribute to the rich heritage of the Walley family with Elise Walley (Kenneth’s daughter and the current owner of Walley Funeral Service). \nSchedule of Events: \n4-5:30pm Family-Friendly Celebration\n-BBQ & Brisket from Phat Daddy’s\n-Music featuring Karen Sommerville\n-Building Tours\n-Chesapeake Heartland Exhibit \n5:30-6pm Honoring the Legacy\n-Blessing of the Building\n-KCPL’s Executive Director: The Kenneth Walley Memorial Garden & Other Visions for the Future

SUMMARY:Something Out Of Kilter exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk: Meet the Artists of Something Out of Kilter \nJoin us at Chestertown RiverArts for a special Artist Talk and Meet the Artists event for Something Out of Kilter\, our Women’s History Month exhibition inspired by the legacy of Sojourner Truth. \nArtists featured in the exhibition will share insights into their work\, creative processes\, and the ideas behind pieces that explore imbalance\, disruption\, and shifting perspectives. In the spirit of Sojourner Truth’s courage and determination to challenge the norms of her time\, the artists reflect on how their work engages with themes of voice\, identity\, and transformation. \nThis informal conversation offers a unique opportunity to hear directly from the artists\, ask questions\, and gain a deeper understanding of the stories and inspirations behind the exhibition. \nFollowing the talk\, guests are invited to continue the conversation and connect with the artists in the gallery.

SUMMARY:African American Read-In: Community Celebration of American American Authors
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Kent County’s annual community celebration of African American authors! \nThe National African American Read-In is the nation’s oldest event dedicated to diversity in literature. It was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English in order to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. \nKent County’s African American Read-In event is an interactive\, multi-generational program that celebrates African American authors\, literacy\, reading\, and diversity in literature through readings shared by members of the community. \nYou are welcome to come to be a part of the audience. You are also invited to step up to the mic and participate as a reader by sharing a piece of writing by an African American author that holds meaning for you. If you are an African American author\, we invite you to share a selection from your own writing. \nReadings may include short essays\, passages from novels\, poetry\, children’s books\, or other types of writing. If you are interested in reading\, we encourage you to choose a selection that resonates on a personal level and to practice reading it out loud ahead of time. Please choose pieces that take no more than 2-4 minutes to read out loud – we want to have time for as many readers as possible! If you would like to be a reader and aren’t sure what to read\, KCPL library staff are happy to help you find a selection of writings by African American authors. \nCelebration of visual literacy is also welcome! If there is a piece of art\, photography\, or other visual medium created by an African American artist that you would like to share\, you are welcome to use your 2-4 minute reading slot to share your interpretation of the piece and share its meaning for you. \nSchedule of Events \n5-5:45pm\nStories for children and the young at heart. Family-friendly. All ages welcome. \n5:45-6:15pm\nA quick break for a light dinner. \n6:15-7pm\nReadings will be drawn from young adult and adult literature. Mature themes may be included. \nCo-sponsored by Chesapeake Heartland: An African American Humanities Project; Kent County Public Library; The Needle’s Eye Academy; Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience at Washington College; Sumner Hall; Washington College Department of Education; and Washington College Black Studies Program.
