The Bookplate will display their own collection of hand-painted Portuguese pottery\, with Portuguese snacks and olive oil provided for the guests of the lecture. The conversation between Boles and Flanigan will be framed with Flanigan’s photographs of the Real Change Retreat Center\, from her own trip to Portugal.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for Kent County’s annual community celebration of African American authors! \nThe National African American Read-In is the nation’s oldest event dedicated to diversity in literature. It was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English in order to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. \nKent County’s African American Read-In event is an interactive\, multi-generational program that celebrates African American authors\, literacy\, reading\, and diversity in literature through readings shared by members of the community. \nYou are welcome to come to be a part of the audience. You are also invited to step up to the mic and participate as a reader by sharing a piece of writing by an African American author that holds meaning for you. If you are an African American author\, we invite you to share a selection from your own writing. \nReadings may include short essays\, passages from novels\, poetry\, children’s books\, or other types of writing. If you are interested in reading\, we encourage you to choose a selection that resonates on a personal level and to practice reading it out loud ahead of time. Please choose pieces that take no more than 2-4 minutes to read out loud – we want to have time for as many readers as possible! If you would like to be a reader and aren’t sure what to read\, KCPL library staff are happy to help you find a selection of writings by African American authors. \nCelebration of visual literacy is also welcome! If there is a piece of art\, photography\, or other visual medium created by an African American artist that you would like to share\, you are welcome to use your 2-4 minute reading slot to share your interpretation of the piece and share its meaning for you. \nSchedule of Events \n5-5:45pm\nStories for children and the young at heart. Family-friendly. All ages welcome. \n5:45-6:15pm\nA quick break for a light dinner. \n6:15-7pm\nReadings will be drawn from young adult and adult literature. DESCRIPTION:Share the creative wealth with our community and pick up something new-to-you! \nWhether you want to get rid of leftover supplies cluttering up your creative space or browse to find supplies for a new project\, this is the perfect event for anyone who enjoys crafting or making art. \nEven if you don’t have items to give\, you are welcome to stop by\, browse the tables\, and pick up supplies to refresh your creative stash! \nCo-hosted by Kent County Public Library and RiverArts. \nAdults (18+)\nTeens (13-17) are also welcome. \nWHAT TO DONATE\nDonations must be arts and craft materials in new or gently used condition. Whether you have supplies from a forgotten project\, clutter in your creative closet\, or a random bag of items accumulated over time\, this is an opportunity to find them a new home. \nAll materials should be usable and not expired. When in doubt\, use the “bestie” rule: If you wouldn’t give the item to your best friend\, it isn’t a good match for the swap either. \nPlease limit donations to 2 bags or boxes of supplies per person. \nItems that have been popular in past years:\n-yarn\n-quilting fabric\n-scrapbooking materials\n-sketchbooks and other art paper\n-pens\, pencils\, and markers\n-acrylics and watercolors\n-blank canvases\n-paint brushes and pallets\n-rubber stamps \nItems that we can’t accept include:\n-completed artwork\n-house paint\n-holiday decor\n-anything that requires special disposal methods or is marked as hazardous \nWHEN TO DONATE\nWe will accept donations 10:30am-12:30pm (this allows enough time for all the items to be swapped before the event ends). \nWHEN TO SWAP\nThe swap tables will be open to browse 11am-1pm (while supplies last). \nAt the end of the swap\, any unclaimed items will be added to the library’s craft supplies\, donated to other organizations\, or recycled.
