National Recognition and Waterfront Planters Showcase the Collective Spirit Keeping Chestertown Vibrant

This week, Main Street Chestertown is celebrating the collective spirit  - from organizational leadership all the way to the hands-on dedication of individual neighbors - that keeps our historic downtown thriving.

We’re pleased to announce we have again been designated as a 2026 Accredited Main Street America program. This is the highest level of recognition awarded by Main Street America, reserved for programs that demonstrate strict adherence to national standards of performance and measurable success in downtown revitalization.

At the organizational level, this accreditation reflects the Board of Directors' and staff's unyielding dedication to Main Street Chestertown's core goals: strengthening our local economic vitality, supporting small businesses, and preserving the unique historic character that defines our community. From partnering with local businesses to help improve and sustain downtown buildings through the Façade Improvement Grant Program, to hosting signature events like tour annual Dickens of a Christmas Festival, the organization works tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our district prosperous and welcoming.

"Main Street America accreditation recognizes the thoughtful, community-driven work happening every day to ensure downtown Chestertown continues to thrive,” said Rebecca Clark, Board President of Main Street Historic Chestertown. “The strongest downtowns honor their history while continuing to evolve, and we are fortunate to have incredible businesses, volunteers, partners, and residents who share a commitment to preserving the character of Chestertown and supporting its future.”

From Leadership to Leadership in Action

But a strategy on paper only succeeds when the community brings it to life. The true pulse of Main Street Chestertown is found in the individuals who dedicate their own time to making our town a more beautiful place to live, work, and visit.

This connection between organizational vision and individual pride perfectly aligns with one of Main Street's key goals: to enrich the streetscapes and waterfront of the downtown area, cultivating a welcoming environment. Down at the Chester River waterfront, that goal was recently brought to life by a few of our dedicated neighbors. Just in time to welcome incoming boaters for Chestertown’s annual Tea Party Festival, a dedicated group of volunteers stepped up to ensure the Chestertown Marina looked its absolute best.

Thanks to the hands-on hard work of Bill and Kay MacIntosh, Ellen Hurst, and Patricia Pheiffer, the planters have been filled with beautiful greens and vibrant blooms, readying the waterfront for another wonderful season.

Every Hand Makes a Difference

From the board members pursuing national accreditation to the volunteers getting their hands dirty at the marina, keeping Chestertown vibrant is a team effort. It is proof that dedication to our historic town isn't just an organizational mission—it’s a community-wide passion.

Whether you are a local business owner, a lifelong resident, or a visitor stepping off a boat at the marina, you are part of what makes Chestertown special. Those interested in getting involved with Main Street Chestertown are encouraged to email us at director [at] mainstreetchestertown.org.
